A Bird, a Girl, and a Rescue is the second book in the fictional series, The Rwendigo Tales. Designed for eight- to fourteen-year-old readers, this middle-grade adventure blends magical realism and action to explore themes of courage, forgiveness, and compassion.
Eleven-year-old Kiisa does not understand why her parents send her away to boarding school. As she says goodbye, her father whispers, "For such a time as this..." and tells her to open her trunk. Inside she finds a small heap of black-and-white feathers that quickly unfold into a tiny wagtail named Njili who can speak.
Njili reveals that she is one of the messengers and has been sent to assist Kiisa with a rescue. Kiisa soon finds herself on a dangerous mission that includes rebel soldiers, kidnapped girls, illegal logging, a hungry cobra, and other unexpected messengers. Along the way she discovers that bravery means acting despite fear and that rescue sometimes comes in surprising forms.
